How Is the Reactive Penalty Calculated?

Under EPDK regulation, if a facility's monthly inductive reactive energy consumption (kVArh) exceeds 20% of active energy consumption (kWh) — or capacitive reactive consumption exceeds 15% — the distribution company applies an extra penalty on the excess. This penalty can reach 5-20% of the monthly bill.

Our calculator derives the ratio from the active and reactive kWh/kVArh values you enter, and shows the amount over the limit and the estimated penalty. Argus EMS performs this calculation automatically every month with live meter data at 15-minute granularity, and alerts before the limit is exceeded.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this tool free?
Yes, all calculation tools are free and require no registration. Results are estimates; the exact billed amount may differ based on the distribution company's official calculation.
How accurate are the results?
The calculation uses EPDK's official 20%/15% limit formula; if the kWh/kVArh values you enter are accurate, the result will be very close to the real billed penalty. Once Argus EMS is installed, this calculation runs automatically every month with live meter data.
