EPDK Reactive Energy Penalty Limits

Per the EPDK regulation, if the reactive energy drawn in a billing period exceeds a certain ratio of active energy, a penalty (reactive energy charge) is applied:

%20
Inductive reactive / active energy upper limit
%15
Capacitive reactive / active energy upper limit

When the limit is exceeded, the reactive energy charge for the excess appears on the bill. A compensation panel lowers these ratios and prevents the penalty — but its adequacy and faults are only visible with continuous monitoring.

Prevent the Penalty Before It Occurs

Argus EMS monitors your inductive/capacitive ratios in real time and alarms as you approach the limit — act before the bill arrives.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the reactive penalty calculated?

If the inductive reactive-to-active ratio exceeds 20% or the capacitive ratio exceeds 15%, a charge is applied for the excess reactive energy at the reactive unit price in the distribution tariff. This tool calculates the excess kVArh and the estimated charge.

What is the difference between inductive and capacitive reactive?

Inductive reactive load comes from motors, transformers and coils (daytime, under load). Capacitive reactive comes from a compensation panel staying engaged more than needed (night, low load). Each has a separate EPDK limit.

How do I avoid the penalty?

A correctly sized and maintained compensation panel keeps reactive ratios below the limit. Panel faults or inadequacy are only noticed with continuous monitoring; Argus EMS alarms as the ratio approaches the limit, allowing intervention before the penalty occurs.

Note: This tool provides an approximate estimate. The exact penalty depends on your distribution company's current tariff, billing period and contracted power.
