What Is Modbus TCP Energy Monitoring?

Modbus TCP energy monitoring means reading Schneider, Siemens and ABB energy analyzers over Ethernet (standard port 502) at regular intervals. The Argus EMS Field Agent collects Modbus TCP/RTU and M-Bus devices on a single platform and forwards the readings to the server over an encrypted link, buffering them locally for 30 days if the connection drops.

Data Collection

A software agent installed on-site reads Modbus-compatible devices at regular intervals. Readings are safely stored in a local buffer.

Secure Transmission

Data is transmitted encrypted to the central server. In the event of an internet outage, it waits in the local buffer for 30 days and auto-syncs when the connection returns.

Automated Processing

Hourly/monthly summaries, EPDK reactive calculations, and billing run automatically in the background. Alarm rules are continuously evaluated.

How is energy monitoring done over Modbus TCP?
A Field Agent PC with Modbus TCP support is connected to the Ethernet port of the energy analyser or meter. The Field Agent reads the registers at 15-minute intervals, the data is carried to the server over MQTT and visualised on the dashboard.
What is the difference between Modbus TCP and Modbus RTU?
Modbus TCP runs over Ethernet; there is no cable distance limit and it supports several masters at once. Modbus RTU uses a two-wire RS-485 serial line; the distance is limited to 1200 m but it is compatible with older devices. Argus supports both.
How many devices can be read at once?
On Modbus TCP the practical limit is set by network capacity; dozens of devices run without trouble. Modbus RTU supports 247 slave IDs per segment. Argus EMS scales to large facilities by managing many loops and gateways.
How long is energy data retained?
Instantaneous readings are kept for 13 months and daily summaries indefinitely. The daily snapshot data that is critical to invoice calculation is never deleted.
Which energy analysers support Modbus TCP?
The Schneider PowerLogic PM series (PM1200–ION9000), Siemens SENTRON PAC3200/PAC3220/PAC4200, the ABB B series and M4M, Socomec Diris, and Klemsan and Entes panel analysers all support Modbus TCP. Models that speak only Modbus RTU over RS-485 are bridged to TCP with a Modbus gateway and read in exactly the same way; Argus EMS uses a ready register template in both cases.
