MODBUS ENERGY MONITORING

Energy Analyser and Meter Monitoring
via Modbus TCP/RTU

Collect data at 15-minute granularity from any Modbus device connected via RS485, RS232 or Ethernet. No replacement needed — integration into your existing infrastructure in 4 hours.

Supported Modbus Protocols and Connection Types

The field agent installed on the site PC collects data simultaneously via multiple gateways.

Protocol Physical Layer Typical Device Max Devices/Gateway
Modbus TCP Ethernet (RJ45) Energy analyser, smart meter Unlimited (IP-based)
Modbus RTU RS485 (2-wire) Transformer protection relay, motor protection 247 devices/segment
Modbus RTU RS232 Legacy PLC, industrial controller 1 device/port
M-Bus TCP Ethernet Water meter, calorimeter 250 devices/gateway

Features of the Modbus Energy Monitoring Solution

From industrial facilities to building management, from hospitals to factories — one platform.

📡

Plug-and-Play Integration

50+ brands/models are defined in the Argus device template system. Enter the slave ID and IP and the register map loads automatically — no manual address entry needed.

🔄

Reliable Data Transmission

Even if the field agent loses connectivity, it buffers up to 30 days in SQLite. When the connection is restored, it synchronises automatically with zero data loss.

📊

15-Minute Granularity

kW, kVAr, kVA, PF, voltage, current — every measurement is taken every 15 minutes. Hourly summaries and daily index tables are calculated automatically.

⚙️

Multi-Gateway Support

Multiple Modbus networks on a single site (transformer room, floor panels, utility areas) are read simultaneously. Each gateway operates in isolation in its own loop.

🔔

Anomaly Alarms

When readings from a device stop, a voltage limit is exceeded or the power factor drops, an automatic e-mail alarm is sent. Notification within 5 minutes.

Remote Monitoring

Common Problems and Solutions

Technical challenges encountered in Modbus-based monitoring systems.

🔌

Connection Dropouts

RS485 line faults or network outages cause data loss. The Argus field agent prevents this with local buffering and automatic reconnection.

📋

Different Register Maps

Every manufacturer has a different address scheme. The Argus device template library supports 50+ models including Schneider, ABB, Siemens and Entes.

⏱️

Poll Rate Conflicts

Slow devices on a multi-device RS485 segment can cause timeouts. Argus allows independent poll interval and timeout settings for each device.

🔢

Data Type Confusion

Float32, INT16, UINT32, BCD — a wrong type selection reads an incorrect value. The template system defines the type and scale factor for every register.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Modbus devices do you support?

Works with any manufacturer's device supporting Modbus TCP or RTU (RS485/RS232). 50+ brands including Entes, Schneider Electric, ABB, Siemens, Carlo Gavazzi, Eastron and ZW Electric are defined in our device template library. For a new model, simply provide the register map.

How many devices can be connected on an RS485 segment?

Up to 247 slave IDs can be addressed on a standard Modbus RTU segment; typically 32 unit loads are supported depending on the RS485 line's driver capacity. For larger segments, RS485 repeaters or multiple gateways are used. Argus supports multiple gateways simultaneously.

Can I use it alongside my existing SCADA system?

Yes. Argus EMS operates as an independent monitoring layer — it does not interrupt SCADA and DCS systems and reads in parallel. You can also forward the collected data to other systems via API.

What are the site PC requirements?

A low-power PC running Windows 10/11 or Linux is sufficient (Raspberry Pi 4 is also supported). The field agent uses approximately 50 MB RAM and 1 CPU core. Even if the site PC loses internet connectivity, data is buffered for up to 30 days.

How long does a pilot installation take?

For models with a ready device template, site installation takes 2–4 hours. Field agent installation, config file creation and the first data flow appearing on screen are completed within 1 business day.
