What Does an Energy Analyzer Do?

An energy analyzer is a panel-mounted device that measures voltage, current, active/reactive power, energy indices and harmonics. Argus EMS reads Schneider, Siemens and ABB analyzers over Modbus TCP/RTU using a ready register template. The readings feed consumption monitoring, EPDK reactive-penalty tracking, subtenant billing and budget forecasting — nobody has to walk to the panel and read the display.

What the Analyzer Measures, What Argus Does

Voltage and Current

Phase-neutral / phase-phase voltage, phase currents and neutral current. Argus derives phase imbalance from these values and points to the panel where one phase is overloaded.

Active and Reactive Power

kW, kVAr, kVA and power factor. Live values appear on the dashboard; 15-minute averages feed trend charts and peak analysis.

Energy Indices

Cumulative kWh and kVArh indices. Consumption is always derived from the index delta (MAX − MIN), so billing stays consistent even if a meter is reset.

Harmonics (THD)

Total harmonic distortion of current and voltage. High THD means extra heat loss in the transformer and neutral overloading; the need for a filter becomes objectively visible.

Four Steps from Analyzer to Dashboard

1️⃣

Select the Model

The analyzer model is picked from the template library, arriving with its register map, scaling factors and data types. For a model not on the list, the register map is defined once.

2️⃣

Connect

An analyzer with an Ethernet port is read directly over Modbus TCP (port 502); an RS-485 analyzer is read through a Modbus gateway. Slave ID and baud rate are entered from the interface.

3️⃣

Collect Data

The field agent reads the registers every 15 minutes, writes them to a local queue and forwards them to the server over an encrypted link. If the line drops, data is kept for 30 days and sent automatically once the connection returns.

4️⃣

Monitor and Alarm

Readings turn into trend, comparison and cost charts on the dashboard. Threshold breaches, approaching reactive limits and communication loss raise alarms automatically.

What the Analyzer Reading Is Worth

On its own an energy analyzer only shows an instantaneous value; someone has to walk to the panel and look at the display. The measurement becomes valuable when it is recorded continuously and compared over time: which shift consumes more, which line runs idle at night, will the reactive ratio cross the penalty limit by month end.

Argus EMS turns analyzer data into a structure that answers those questions. Main meter and transformer readings give the facility total, sub-analyzers give the floor/tenant/line breakdown, and the gap between total and breakdown reveals common-area consumption.

Which energy analyzer models are supported?
Schneider PowerLogic PM1200, PM2000, PM5000, PM8000, ION7400/ION9000 and the HDPM6000 multi-circuit unit; Siemens SENTRON PAC3200/PAC3220/PAC4200; ABB B series and M4M; Socomec Diris; plus Klemsan, Entes and Eastron panel analyzers all ship with a ready register template. A model not on the list is added to the template system once its register map is provided.
How is an energy analyzer connected to Argus EMS?
If the analyzer has an Ethernet port it is read directly over Modbus TCP (port 502). Models with only an RS-485 serial output are bridged to TCP through a Modbus gateway. The field agent on the site PC reads the registers every 15 minutes and forwards them over an encrypted link, buffering for 30 days if the connection drops.
Can analyzer data be used for billing?
Yes. The active energy index (kWh) is split into day/peak/night periods and priced with the EPDK tariff to produce tenant invoices; reactive indices (kVArh) feed the 20% inductive / 15% capacitive penalty tracking. Billing is calculated from the main meter or transformer reading — sub-meters are excluded from the sum to avoid double counting.
Do I need to replace my existing analyzers?
No. Argus EMS reads the analyzers already installed in your panels as they are; no device swap or new cabling is required. Commissioning consists of installing the field agent on the site PC and defining the devices — in a typical facility the first data arrives within four hours.
