In most facilities the compensation panel is installed and forgotten. Capacitors lose capacity over time, contactors stick, fuses blow — the panel looks "working" while the ratios quietly deteriorate. The result is a reactive charge at month-end; in large facilities a single breach can reach six or seven figures.

Argus EMS reads the reactive power control relay (e.g. GrupArge RKR) or the panel analyzer over Modbus: step states, instantaneous cosφ, indexes and cumulative ratios are recorded daily. Together with the reactive penalty tracking system, it produces staged warnings before the threshold.

What Is Compensation Monitoring?

Compensation monitoring continuously reads step status, cosφ and reactive indexes from the reactive power control relay and panel analyzer to show whether the panel actually works — computing the approach to EPDK ratio limits and alerting before a penalty is charged.

Why should a compensation panel be monitored remotely?
Panel faults usually go unnoticed until the bill arrives: a burnt capacitor bank or a relay out of service silently raises the cumulative reactive ratio. With remote monitoring, step status and ratios are visible every day; the issue is caught before the penalty reaches the bill.
How is a capacitor step fault detected?
Argus EMS reads step states from the reactive power control relay and watches switching patterns. A step that never engages or stays permanently engaged indicates capacity loss or a contactor fault; the system raises a notification in that case.
When is the compensation (reactive) charge applied?
Under the EPDK rule, if cumulative inductive reactive energy within the month exceeds 20% of active energy, or capacitive reactive exceeds 15%, the distribution company applies a reactive charge. Even a single day's excursion can spoil the month-end cumulative ratio — which is why monitoring must be daily.
Can you connect to my existing reactive power relay?
Common relays with Modbus communication are supported; a ready register template exists for the GrupArge RKR. If your relay has no communication port, the same monitoring is provided through an energy analyzer added to the panel.
