How Does a Water Monitoring System Work?

A water monitoring system reads the index of M-Bus or Modbus water meters at regular intervals through a gateway. The index difference between two readings is that period's consumption in m3; that value is converted to an amount using the water tariff. Because the main meter and the sub-meters are defined as separate devices, consumption is visible both facility-wide and per apartment or block. Remote water meter reading removes the monthly manual index round; water consumption monitoring continues without interruption and by a single method.

What Remote Reading Actually Changes

Manual reading produces one data point a month; remote reading produces a series for every hour of the day. That difference has three practical consequences: a leak becomes visible the next day rather than months later, apartment allocation leaves the reading-error argument behind, and water consumption becomes comparable with electricity on the same time axis.

How is a water meter read remotely?
Water meters with M-Bus or Modbus communication are read at regular intervals through a gateway; the field agent collects the index value and forwards it to the platform. Mechanical meters without communication can be made readable with a pulse output or an M-Bus module.
Is per-apartment and per-block water tracking possible?
Yes. The main meter and the sub-meters are defined as separate devices, each tracked by its own index. Consumption in m3 and the tariff-based amount are reported separately for each block, line, retail unit or apartment.
What if the main meter and the apartment meters do not agree?
The gap between the main meter and the sum of the sub-meters normally stays within a narrow band. When that gap starts to grow, either there is unmetered consumption or a meter is failing to read; both cases raise a warning and the gap stays visible in m3.
How is water cost calculated?
Consumption is derived in m3 from the index difference and converted to an amount using the period's water tariff. Where tariffs are tiered the relevant tier is applied; when an invoice is uploaded, measurement and invoice are compared so the source of any deviation becomes visible.

How often should a water meter be read?
A month-end index is enough for billing, but far too late for leak and fault detection: at month end you only see how much was lost, not when it started.
